This month's learning goals....

Language(Français & English):
This month students will learn about "Recount" writing. Authors use the form "Recount" to retell events that they have experienced.

One of our mentor texts will be:

This is a great book to teach voice - how authors use humour, and personal perspective to capture our attention!

Students are making good progress with reading in French and in English, thanks to your support in encouraging your child to read every night for homework!

Also - please continue to help your child study personal spelling lists which are glued into their agendas twice a month - good spellers are good readers and writers!

Our school initiative "French Incentive" pins are a hit with the students! I have seen a good improvement in students speaking French. They should feel very proud of their efforts! I would love to see all students earn a pin in the month of Feb...please encourage your child to speak French often!

If you haven't seen them yet...students have created slideshows about themselves
"en français" and they did such a great job! They can be viewed on our blog at

Math:
We will begin the month of February working on Multiplication and Division with the use of arrays. These are visual aids that help students understand that multiplying means putting items into equal groups.
Students will learn mental strategies (eg: skip counting) to solve multiplications up to 7 X 7
and division up to 49 / 7 for grade 3 students and up to 9 X 9 and 81/9 for grade 4 students.

Grade 4 students will also be doing multiplication of two digit by one digit using various strategies such as arrays, drawings, base ten materials, algorithms...etc.

Some multiplication/division practice activities will be sent home during the month of Feb.
Thank you for your continued support with the math homework booklet that is coming home on a weekly basis. These activities help students practice problem solving and help them develop new strategies.

Toward the end of February we will also be tackling 2D geometry.
Students will compare, describe and sort two-dimensional shapes by their properties.

Étude Sociale:
Grade 3 Students are completing a research project of an Ontario city. Their culminating task is a brochure of that city, including tourism and industry.

Grade 4 students are completing their study of Canada.

Religion:

The virtue this month: Empathy
Big idea for Religion & Family Life:
  • Living a Moral Life - understanding the nature of sin and our human capacity to choose certain actions which do not show love for God or neighbour.
  • To recognize that their talents and gifts are meant to be shared with others.
  • Analyzing situations that they can affect others by what they do and say.

Our Mentor Text to discuss social responsibility and empathy for others:
